Gray Design Group is seeking a controller that will oversee the financial operations of the company. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can manage the complete accounting cycle, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and compliance. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a strong financial structure including the accurate and timely availability of financial information to aid in decision-making.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecast preparation and development of internal control policies and procedures. The Controller will work closely with the leadership team to facilitate accurate and timely financial statements, as well as compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. This role requires strong leadership and analytical skills, as well as a deep understanding of accounting principles and practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management:

  • Execute accounting operations, including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting and Revenue Recognition.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting and compliance with required filings.
  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance.
  • Manage and comply with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Client Billing and follow-up with Project Managers on overdue accounts.

Budgeting + Forecasting:

  • Lead the development and implementation of budgeting and financial forecasting processes.
  • Develop efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Provide financial forecasts and cash flow projections.
  • Monitor performance against budget and provide variance analysis.

Internal Controls:

  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Execute quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage the year-end tax process and liaise with external accountants.

Systems + Processes:

  • Evaluate and implement accounting systems and software to improve efficiency.
  • Streamline processes for financial reporting and operations.

Strategic Support:

  • Act as a key advisor to the leadership team on financial matters.
  • Provide insightful analysis to support business decisions, cost reduction initiatives and profitability improvement strategies.
  • Participate in the formulation of the company’s strategy and assist in the execution of the strategic plan.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role preferably in the design and architecture industry.

Technical Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Experience with Vantage Point or other ERP systems, financial reporting software and advanced Excel skills.
  • Familiarity with tax compliance and reporting.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is primarily office-based with standard working hours. Some travel may be required for recruitment events, training sessions and meetings.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and perform work on a computer.
  • Occasional lifting of office supplies and materials.
