Designed for the Experience

Carmody MacDonald saw an opportunity to rethink how their office could better support their people, clients and future growth. Partnering with Gray Design Group early in the process, the team explored test fits for locations across Clayton before deciding to remain in the PNC Center and reimagine their existing space. The renovation expanded the firm’s footprint to 40,640 square feet across three floors, bringing all attorneys together while allowing room to grow.

As clients and visitors step off the elevator, the reception area immediately reflects the firm’s vision for a professional yet inviting environment. A marble reception desk anchors the space, offering comfortable seating and expansive views of Clayton. A large boardroom sits directly behind reception for formal meetings, while smaller conference rooms nearby support everyday interactions.

Designed for Important Client Moments

Located just off the lobby, the signing room provides a dedicated setting for important legal transactions. The space offers a private space where documents can be reviewed and signed with ease. Glass walls maintain a visual connection to the office while careful acoustic planning helps preserve confidentiality.

Designed for Hospitality

Just outside the room, a small coffee bar softens the transition from formal meetings. Designed as a hospitality-style amenity, it offers a relaxed moment within the client experience. Natural wood cabinetry, brass accents and deep blue tile create a refined backdrop while curated décor and locally sourced artwork add warmth and personality.

Designed for Connection

As visitors descend the stairs, the space opens into a lounge designed for conversation, informal meetings and social interaction. Rather than a traditional breakroom, the client envisioned a comfortable setting where attorneys and staff could unwind, host small events or connect with colleagues and clients. The lounge serves as a central gathering space, featuring a custom bar, casual seating with sofas and lounge chairs, banquettes framed by bookcases and large tables for group gatherings.

Designed for Collaboration

Next to the café lounge, a conference room supports presentations and client meetings while remaining visually connected to the surrounding space. This relationship allows people to move easily between focused discussion and informal conversation. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls from Falkbuilt allow natural light to pass between spaces while maintaining acoustic performance and privacy. Materials throughout the stair and lounge areas balance durability, comfort and sound control. Acoustic drywall behind portions of the wallcovering helps reduce sound transfer between floors, maintaining a calm environment upstairs even during larger gatherings below.

Designed for Focus

Beyond the lounge, offices and workspaces take advantage of natural light and views of Clayton. The administrative area is connected to the private offices to support daily operations. Glass wall systems with gradient film allow sunlight to move through the workspace, preserving an open atmosphere while maintaining privacy where needed.

Private offices accommodate both focused work and client meetings. Each includes sit-to-stand desks, comfortable seating areas and dedicated spaces for collaboration. Materials and furnishings continue the design language seen throughout the office, modern yet warm, professional yet approachable.

Designed for the Future

With additional space across three floors and flexible gathering areas, the office can adapt as the team continues to grow. The renovated workplace feels polished, comfortable and uniquely tailored to the firm, supporting focused work, collaboration and meaningful client experiences while reflecting the culture and character of Carmody MacDonald.
