Architecture | Interior Design
Overview
Originally built in 1963 to serve 15,000 students, the MU Student Center has undergone a major transformation to accommodate a growing enrollment of over 30,000. This expansion involved blending new construction with a remodeled structure, creating a unified facility. Given the significant growth, careful planning and phasing were essential to minimize disruption. Gray was brought in during the first phase to streamline the design process and coordinate with over 20 client groups, providing a cohesive vision for the student center.

Design Concept
Located at a key campus intersection known as ‘Main and Main,’ the MU Student Center serves as the campus family room and a central hub for student life. Gray’s design embraces this role, creating a space filled with school spirit, history and pride. The design honors the university’s traditions while offering a welcoming and dynamic environment for students, faculty and visitors.
Visual Identity + Brand Integration
To reflect the university’s mascot and rich heritage, unique design elements such as tiger-patterned carpeting, sconces featuring tiger stripe designs and branded lighting were incorporated throughout the space. These thoughtful details create a sense of pride and connection, enhancing the student center’s atmosphere and aligning with the school’s identity.
